Stoic, an independent game development company and winner of this year’s Best Debut at the Game Developers Conference (GDC) Awards, and leading independent game publisher Versus Evil today announced several new updates for the epic Viking role-playing (RPG) strategy game The Banner Saga. The game, now available for both Linux and SteamOS, has added support for Steam Big Picture, saved games on Steam Cloud, as well as full gamepad support for console-compatible controllers.
“The Linux version of The Banner Saga is a big technical leap for our studio” said John Watson, Technical Director and Co-Founder at Stoic. “It is one of the final pieces that rewards our Kickstarter backers and those gamers that have been looking to play the game on their OS of preference. The addition of cloud saves, controller support, and Big Picture in this update really helps us work towards accomplishing the next phase of Banner Saga development.”
The Banner Saga is a single-player, story-driven Viking saga, where a player’s choice in travel, conversation and combat determines the outcome of their own personal story as well as the survival of an entire civilization. The game also features stunning 2D animation and art, a unique tactical combat system and a cast of unforgettable characters.
“Great games shouldn’t be limited by platforms,” said Steve Escalante, General Manager of Versus Evil. “The Banner Saga is a captivating experience that can now be enjoyed with Steam Big Picture. With the addition of controller support, it paves the way for launching on consoles and bringing new ways for players to experience this epic Viking adventure – in the living room on the big screen.”
The Banner Saga launched to much critical acclaim in 2014, has received several awards and nominations, including winner of the 2014 Geekie Awards for “Best Video Game”, best RPG and Android Game of the Year from PocketGamer, finalist for “Excellence in Visual Arts” and two honourable mentions for “Excellence in Design” and “Excellence in Audio” at the 2014 Independent Game Festival, and has been recognized in multiple categories by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) and the DICE awards.
Localized in French, German, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish languages, The Banner Saga was one of the earlier funding successes on Kickstarter.
